There are many visitors to Maher – curious, wanting to know more, wanting to know if what they have heard about Maher is true, wanting to do something, moved by the stories of the inmates, by the dedication of Sr. Lucy and her staff, by the atmosphere of love, compassion and good will at Maher. They are simply bowled over. They become friends, and stay friends for life doing whatever they can to help Maher. Some donate money and material regularly. Some collect money and material for Maher. Some get more friends and spread the word. Others help by coming and spending time with the women and children and by teaching simple skills to them or even telling them stories or singing a few songs for them. Some friends come regularly to teach games, English, karate, drawing, craft and other such utility skills. They contribute to Maher in four ways: by their time, energy, material and above all, by their love and kindness. It is the friends of Maher, which provide the power of sustenance.

Once a friend, a friend for life. This is the motto of Maher.

To put it in another way, one might well say: “They came, they saw, and they were conquered.”

   
 


I wish there would be more projects like Maher in India, because this would create a better world.
